Paint on frames

v7_tut_paint_thumb.jpg The Frame painter is a great way to add special effects to your animation.  You can also add mouths and eyes to your character.  This tutorial shows the basic operation of the frame painter tool, found in all editions of Stop Motion Pro v7.

(Scroll down to see this tutorial as a video)

Start a File | New project, and capture a frame.

To use the Frame painter, you need to have captured at least one frame to paint on.

Frames you have painted on are reversible.  When you paint on a frame and save it, the original frame is duplicated and "hidden" automatically.  You can always retrieve these hidden frames using the Editor, at any time.

Click on the Tools | Frame painter menu item. (Action! Plus and above editions can also access this tool from the sidebar Tools tab.)

Use the Frame type tab on the right hand sidebar to select which version of your frames you wish to edit.  If you want to export/make movie the painted frames from SMP, make sure you change the default option to Stored plus Full resolution.  v7_tut_paint_frmtype.jpg

The Frame painter Actions tab has the following tools from right to left:

Brush
To paint with.  Ensure the button is highlighted and the color is set correctly to your taste.  Simply click and paint on the image. You must click Next or Prevous to save the painted changes.

Eraser
The size of the eraser is set using the same radius tool of the brush.

Color sampler eyedropper
Select this tool and then move over your frame.  Click on whichever color you wish to sample.  This color appears in the color box, you can then select the brush to paint with.

Paste previous painting
Press this button to paste whatever you painted on your last saved frame onto the current frame.  This is ideal if you want an image to be repeated.

Move
Select this tool if you wish to move the image.  It does not move the painted image.

Lasso
Create a shape which prevents drawing outside of the lassoed area.  Works across multiple frames.

Lasso off
turns off the lasso

Undo / redo
These buttons will undo and redo in steps.  Note this only works with non saved frames.

Oninonskinning slider
Check your painting with previous painted frames using the onionskinning slider.  This is great for seeing incremental changes.

Navigating in the Frame editor
Step through frames using the Previous and Next buttons at the bottom right of the window.
Use the Best fit and Full size buttons to size your image.  You can also zoom in and out using the scroll wheel on your mouse, select the Move tool before clicking though!

Those using DSLR cameras with EVF or a video assist can use the drop down menu on the Frame type tab to select which image they are going to paint on, the high resolution frames, stored frames or the video assist frames.
