Ian Flemming (Head of Production Technology) and the team at AARDMAN (http://www.aardman.com/) have created a new half hour Wallace and Gromit special, released in 2008 - "A Matter of Loaf and Death ".
“Since the last W&G short was shot in 1994, technology has moved on a great deal. Although we still plan to shoot our stop frame feature films traditionally using 35mm Mitchell film cameras there is clearly a huge amount of digital technology used during the production. Our stop frame commercials and television work has been using digital capture technology for many years now and this project was a great opportunity to bring ourselves right up to date with a production process which gives us extremely high quality images linked to all the advantages of a digital workflow.
Using high-end digital stills cameras with Stop Motion Pro V6 is a wonderful solution for us enabling to playback the high resolution animation frames in real time so that we can make creative decisions on set instantly. With Stop Motion Pro interfacing directly to the DSLR cameras, the director and animators can work at a level of precision unavailable until now,” said Ian Fleming, Head Of Production Technology at Aardman.
“Working closely with the team at Aardman has given us great insights into the requirements of world leading animators,” says Ross Garner (above right) from Stop Motion Pro. “We are proud to be working on such a high profile production, creating world leading technology that will benefit the stop motion animation industry. Techniques pioneered will substantially reduce costs of all future stop motion short films, advertisements and feature films.”
